Q: As Salaamu Alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh,
I pray that i can get the answer to this inshaAllah before the last 10 days are gone. I was looking forward for itikaaf at the masjid for the last 10 days of Ramadan; however, I got my monthly visit(menstruation). my question is, can i still go to the masjid and make istighfaar and lots of dhikr/duas since i can’t perform Qiyaam layl? Jazaakum Allahu khair

Q: Can a woman do itikalf in musjeed? (text)
Answers: وعليكم السلام ورحمة الله وبركاته
According to Imaam Shafee, a woman can do Itikaaf in the Musjid. Imaam Abu Hanifa has given preference that her itikaaf be done in the home. The one doing the itikalf must attempt to seclude themselves for such an act of worship. The very phrase Itikalf implies that the Mutakif would let go of all distractions and fling themselves towards the Mercy of Allah (SWT.) Thus, even for those (shafees) that allow a woman to go to the musjid, the lack of arrangements as well as distractions for the woman would defeat the purpose of this action of worship (itikalf.)
Likewise, a woman in menses cannot attend the musjid in the condition described by you. One must be in a pure state to be in the Pure House (musjid.)
What you can do: The Kindness of Allah (SWT) is not limited to the musjid. You should seclude yourself in an area of your house, (or your bedroom,) make as much dua, istigfaar, doorood, etc as you prefer. You would not be able to perform any salah or physically touch any Quran nor read it out except for the Quran you read in your mind without moving your lips whilst you are in the state of major impurity. You can read the translation and tafseer of the Quran. Merely do not touch the Arabic portion. Additionally, you may read a good book on doing things that would attain you the best jannah.
Allah Certainly Knows Best.
