Q: Asalamualikom Imaam,
InshAllah you are doing well. I have been hearing since childhood that when a kid smiles in their dream it is that an angle plays with them. I have a newborn who does not smile when she is awake yet, however it is very interesting that when she goes to sleep every 5 to 10 seconds she smiles or giggles. Is there a hadith that confirms that and an angle makes them laugh or why they laugh.

I thank you for your query. May Allah bless you and your new born child. You imply that the child is female. Allah blesses the house that has a female child in it, ameen.
A child not smiling in the awakened state could be due to multiple reasons. From a health point of view, none of which should be of great concern once a certificate of health has been furnished from a qualified doctor. Every child gets accustomed to the world differently. Parents expect a lot from children — some expect a smile, others expect them to start school at a certain age, be like little adults are parties, etc. Although all these are appropriate wants for the success of our children, it is better to accept each day as it comes — each smile as well as each tear. All is the Rabb and a Rabb by definition nurtures as He sees fit.
It is not always befitting to seek a Hadith that deals specifically as it relates to the laughter or smile of a child. Such a query and response would limit the depth of a man (saw) as it relates to the concept that states: his (saw) words remain minimal yet the words are coupled with the broadest of implications. Rather than sharing Hadith that can also do justice to your query, I prefer to give you something beyond for now, Quran. (Look into the books of tafseer for insight to these Ayats.)
- Allah (SWT) states: Allah has created a protector for every soul created. The definition of a Protector: that which remains the Guardian of every entity and gives a smile to some and a tear to others when He sees fit, wealth to some and poverty to others—all in the time that He finds best. Likewise, He (SWT) states: angels are appointed to guard a person. This protection extends beyond physicality. Protector is inclusive of but not limited to protection gained from angles. In the case of children, angles assist in making them tranquil during the cause of their sleep, play, etc.
(I am giving you your hadith anyway!) Sometimes a lack of smile could be due to the angles that are protecting the child not being content with some haram (wrong) that surrounds the child. For some it could be the open display of animate pictures, the lack of praying by guardians, constant bombardment of television, animate objects, hostile spousal relations, music, immodesty, lies, etc. Angle dissatisfaction would vary from family to family and undoubtedly affect family satisfaction. When Allah is happy regarding a person (family, home) He conveys this message to angels that spread its information of earth. (paraphrased from hadith) Thus, one must not be sad that a child is not smiling as much parents must evaluate parental behavior.
Read the following as much as you can in front of your child and make it her first worldly words:سُوۡرَةُ النَّمل
قُلِ ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ وَسَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰ عِبَادِهِ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱصۡطَفَىٰٓۗ ءَآللَّهُ خَيۡرٌ أَمَّا يُشۡرِكُونَ
Allah Certainly Knows Best.
